Making Moving Day Successful

Moving is an exciting time in most people’s lives, although you are probably feeling a bit of trepidation and a LOT of anxiety as well.  Relax! Surviving moving day takes a bit of moxy, a positive mindset, and some planning.  Here are a few tips to help you keep your sanity during your next move:

1. Be organized! Take the time to decide a color for each room, yes a color. Then as you begin to pack only put objects from one room in each box and be sure the box is labeled with the coordinating color. This may seem like a lot of work however, when it comes time to unpack you can be sure the correct boxes are in the right rooms and suddenly unpacking is a cinch.

2. Sell Away. If you have items that you plan to sell in the future do not pack them and bring them with you. Take the time to try and sell the items that you no longer wish to keep. Consider using on-line sites,  consignment shops, or a good old fashion yard sale!  In the end,  whatever is left that you don’t want to keep can be donated to a local organization.  No matter how you decide to do it, you’ll be glad to be able to say good riddance to the extra clutter you’re no longer carrying with you!

3. Prepare. Although everyone likes to get a jump start on packing it is important to keep things you will need daily. Have two baskets, one for daily needs such as medications and one for tools you will need for moving such as duct tape, and scissors. This will make your day to day life before the move easier as well as the actual day of the move.

4. Don’t let your pets be pests! Moving can be hard on your fur-babies too.  You may find that your loving lap kitty is suddenly a hissing, scratching ball of fluff on the big day, which can all but prevent your efforts at progress.  Board your pets for the move, or sequester them in a room at the back of the house (one that you have already packed up would be best) to reduce the moving day anxiety for you both.
