The BBQ Rib Burnoff is the biggest BBQ event each year on Hilton Head Island, and this year will be no exception. The event takes place at Hilton Head’s Coastal Discovery Museum, located on the 68-acre Honey Horn Plantation. The normally sedate fields of Honey Horn will be transformed into a lively festival filled with the mouth-watering smells of the best BBQ the island has to offer.

The Kiwanis Club’s BBQ Rib Burnoff truly begins the night before, when a combination of local restaurant chefs and top-notch amateurs begin slow-cooking their BBQ, competing both for trophies and bragging rights for another year. In addition to the cooking, there will be music and great conversation. For the event’s younger visitors, there will be inflatable castles and slides in addition to displays by the Sheriff’s Department and Fire Department. Proceeds will benefit local children’s charities.

Hilton Head Island is a wonderful place to visit…and is truly an amazing place to live. The waterway itself is prized for its freshwater and saltwater fishing opportunities. No trip to Hilton Head would be complete without an adventure in these beautiful waters.

If you go, be sure to get in some angling. If the smell of saltwater draws you, then enjoy the smell of the briny surf while you fish for drum fish, cobia, flounder, bass and mackerel. Or settle into one of the freshwater sites and enjoy a relaxing day fishing for catfish, two types of bass, redfish, herring, white crappie, and shad. Shrimp, crab and other seafood delights await your traps and pails, as well.

Boating along the Intracoastal Waterway is sure to become a favorite pastime as you take in the sights sounds and smells of the water. Watch the dolphin play and cavort! Take in an evening sunset. For the sports enthusiast consider touring the waterway via standup paddle board or by Sea Doo. Experience the closest thing to absolute peace on Earth – all right here in the heart of the Lowcountry. Check out the www.scdhec.org to learn more about fishing permits, seasons, and limits.

We believe we are poised for an exceptional future! The Town of Hilton Head Island, private communities, and businesses are investing in capital improvements and new business initiatives.

Last year the Town of Hilton Head Island invested in the redevelopment of Coligny Beach Park. This year they are working with area private property owners and making considerations to redevelop the whole Coligny Beach area.

The new owners of Shelter Cove Mall have unveiled their new plans, which include an open air, mixed use development containing retail, restaurant and residential components. This transformation will rejuvenate a central location of the Island.

The RBC Heritage Classic Golf Tournament was first played during Thanksgiving Weekend of 1969 as part of an effort both to promote Hilton Head Island, as well as the brand-new Harbour Town Golf Links course designed by Pete Dye with help from Jack Nicklaus. Charles Fraser, who was responsible for Sea Pines Plantation and is credited with putting Hilton Head Island on the map, took a huge gamble by inviting the top golf players in the world to play at a relatively unknown location during a holiday weekend.

Fortunately, Fraser’s gamble paid off in a big way, with many top golfers coming to Hilton Head Island, including Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. The purse was $100,000, which sounds like pocket change compared to today’s multimillion-dollar tournament purses. The winner of this first Heritage Classic was Arnold Palmer, who enjoyed his first victory in more than a year. This tournament resulted in widespread media coverage of Palmer’s victory as well as the Harbour Town Golf Links course and Hilton Head Island itself.

Charles Fraser’s gamble helped to put Hilton Head Island—and the Heritage Classic Golf tournament— on the map. The RBC Heritage is now played in April—this year with a purse of $5.7 million—and now has live TV coverage. It now attracts numerous golf fans whose purchases have an estimated impact of $81 million on the South Carolina state economy each year. The NAR conducted the survey in March 2012 controlling the results for both age and income.

Repeating the trend from 2010, the biggest share of purchases of second homes in 2011 occurred in the South, with the second largest share of second home purchases occurring in the West. Further, the sale of distressed properties made up for about 40% of vacation home sales, 29% of primary home sales, and about half of the sales of investment properties.

These findings suggest that this is a great time to purchase real estate! If you have been looking for a Hilton Head Island home or villa that fits your lifestyle needs, or dreaming of owning your own vacation home, now is the time to go for it. Contact me, Jacque Johnson and let me use my real estate experience as a South Carolina licensed real estate Broker to help you make Hilton Head your home.

The Easter egg hunt itself will begin promptly at 11:00 a.m., and will be divided according to age groups to give everyone a fair chance at finding their own hidden treasures. The intent of this festival is to provide a completely safe environment for children to begin celebrating Easter alongside their parents. In addition to the Easter egg hunt itself, there will be activities including a bounce house, blowup rides, music, face painting, and more.

All money earned at this event will be used to benefit the Hilton Head Island Recreation Association Children’s Scholarship Fund. If you would like further information about the event, call (843) 681-7273.

Hilton Head’s award-winning bike trails are just one of three designated Silver Level Bike Friendly Communities on the Atlantic seaboard as certified by the League of American Bicyclists. This means that the thousands of people who bike every year on the island know that their paths are well connected across the island and that safety and path maintenance are high priority. There are 6 miles of bike lanes, 117 miles of shared use pathways and 108 miles of paved share use pathways with 14 more miles planned. Nearly a full quarter of the arterial streets have bike lanes or paved shoulders. It’s no wonder Disney’s Family Fun magazine rates Hilton Head Island as one of the Top 5 Family Biking Getaways in the United States.

Families biking together will love the meandering paths underneath the green tree canopies. There’s no need to start at one side of the island, bike a bit, then find another path to hit the other side of the island. The paths crisscross and wind enough to get you to where you want to go without backtracking or leaving the trail, and at low tide, you can even use the 12 miles of beaches as biking trails since the sand remains so packed and smooth that it feels like a pathway.

So if you don’t have a bike already, rent one at one of the many bike rental shops found around the island and enjoy a full day of outdoor pleasure on Hilton Head.
